Been an Apple Mac user for decades.

Why? Hours weeping trying to make early Windows systems work while employers (unwilling to pay a proper technician) fumed. My little Mac Classic II worked right out of the box, was easy to work (and network) and it wasn’t made by The Big Man. And it didn’t get viruses.

Well, Mac has gone all intel and here we go: loss of innocence for Mac fans. And there’s the iphone. Not being impressed by gadgets, I think anyone who pays $500+ for a phone (far less queues up outside a shop for 26 hours to be the first person to do so) is a fool. And it augurs bedly, I mean badly (sorry mind went wandering there) that intelligent people can’t see this is the kind of shit that is consuming us to the death of Homo sapiens. It’s a phone. And it forces one to use Apple’s chosen service prover, locks you in.

That’s not a Mac thing, it’s a Microsoft thing. They’ve had me as a loyal customer for a long time, I think I paid for a few inches of gelcoat on Steve Job’s yacht, but did so willingly. Well my old iMac is ailing now but I’m not rushing to buy a new one. They’re just another company. I used to think different.

Sunday: John Naughton in The Observer has a more informed take on the iphone here.
